The Snake Charmer, Henri Rousseau, 1907
If you live among them and encounter them daily
On the way to bathe, fish, gather water-
You may as well charm them and yourself, to pass the time.
If it makes everyone's life more pleasant- why not?
They are heavy, strong and dense.
They can squeeze the life out of you. (Some are even fast and poisonous-)
If it 'takes the time it takes'- for them to investigate and then move on...
It is wise: To always carry a flute!
It is wise: To always carry a flute!

...a flute...yes...
this reminds me of the sentiment in DH Lawrence's poem aboutthe Snake
nicely done
love the end line! Charm them indeed if you live among them. Well done - I'm still sweating this one out... ;P
Yes - we all need some protection!
i best be keeping a flute with me...have removed quite a few from the back yard....and i think this goes well beyond snakes....
Indeed. I wonder if a guitar will do?
Such a good idea, carrying a flute with which to charm them "on the way to bathe, fish, gather water" ...I just love "gather water"! What a wonderful way to say it.

I do play the flute ... and my mother always urged me to be charming ...

Good advice indeed!

Excellent words of warning. (Even if you can't play the flute you can whack them with it!)
