When I was young I loved zoo's.
Growing up I drew a lot of animals,
sometimes I wanted them
Eye to eye, eye to paw-
I needed close up:
scents or lay and curl of fur,
feather and microscopic colors.
I watched twitch of whisker,
tilt of head.
Sometimes line of shoulder,
flick of wing
shift of weight.
Grain of hoof, shell,
the grit of tendon
turn of horns
or curve of claw.

izzy! So well done.
What a special poem, Izzy. I love the Oregon Zoo and haven't been there for a couple of seasons. My husband and I have been in the middle of rainstorms, so weather is not a deterrent. I just need to make day trip plans and go!
Very emotive poem, full of appreciation for the subject matter.
An animal lover ~~~ Yes! Me too.
I loved the Zoo too, spent whole summers there sketching and dreaming. Now my zoo must have wide open spaces and I love it still.
A detailed and atmospheric characterisation of the child's intense and intimate perception of animals. Really effective stuff.
Seems you still love zoos and what you observe there! No close-ups though I guess!
